The gift of embodied presence
Listening hands, gentle touch, open heart.
Inherent in our survival mechanisms is the need for touch. A baby when it is born must be seen, heard, and held for food alone will not ensure its survival. Touch is one of the 5 senses essential to our growth and development. Over time our bodies tell the story of how we were held and express the beliefs we inherited about our selves and the world around us. When we touch another person we are making contact with the history of who they are and who they have become.
Their pain and their tension are an expression of the holding patterns they have inherited to remain standing in the face of life’s difficulties.
As massage therapists we must honor the sacredness of this process and begin every session by listening with a soft eye and an open heart to the wisdom of their body. Before we make any changes to the structure we must first bear witness to how they stand and breathe and move in the present moment. We acknowledge the places where there is constriction and pain and notice the conditioned patterns and habits that have formed as a result. Slowly and mindfully we make contact with the body, feel the connection of our breath, and invite balance back into the tissue.
Creating space for the breath to flow.
